Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Virtual Ladies Day

Evoke.ie Virtual Ladies Day 2020

I entered the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Virtual Ladies Day, in conjunction with The Curragh and Evoke.ie this year! The event was judged by Evokes editor Sybil Mulcahy

I chose my dress first and then made a bespoke design based around it. The fabric in the design is all handmade in house by myself. This is a very difficult design to achieve as the brim needs to be stabalised enough to hold its shape. The brim itself has been constructed from one continous piece of my handmade fabric. It is a continuation of loops which gives it its beautiful design.

I wanted to add a pop of colour that was subtle yet beautiful.I embroidered flowers in different colours into the hat base to add that colour aspect.

The piece is attached to a hairband to keep it in place on the head.

I had the perfect afternoon tea party set up organised for my garden on the day to take photographs, unfortunately though the weather didn’t want to play ball so instead I took the photographs inside and I was quite pleased by their outcome. See the full image gallery below.

DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY VIRTUAL LADIES DAY Margaret O' Rourke wearing Saraden Designs Millinery - Irish Milliner - Award Winning Milliner - Ladies Day - Racing Style

My mum Margaret again teamed up with me to dress up for the  Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Virtual Ladies Day. I made her a bespoke pieces to go with her dress also. She showed me her dress on the Tuesday before the event and I had a new piece ready just in time.

The fabric again was all handmade by myself. I had the same issue as my own design with the main part need to be properly stabalised to give the desired effect.

The fabric is again constructed in one pieces and is a continued loop with no breaks in the fabric. Margaret showed me the collar on her dress which had pewter coloured stones on it. I had the same colour stones so attached them at each intersecting section of the hat. This really finished the design.
